Il faut cultiver notre jardin. — Voltaire, “Candide”
Since the first humans were expelled from Eden, gardens have been associated with Paradise, the lost place of happiness we try to recreate on earth. Part nature, part human endeavour, gardens have been connected to poetry, painting, architecture and music. Gardens have mirrored the philosophical, political, social, and aesthetic ideas of their time. From these perspectives, we'll look at gardens in different cultures and times, tracing their interconnectedness, mutual influence and aesthetic shifts.
