Week 1: Liszt’s symphonic poems, including Tasso: lamento e trionfo (Byron), Les Preludes (Lamartine), Mazeppa (Hugo) and Die Ideale (Schiller). Week 2: Smetana’s symphonic poems Wallenstein’s Camp (Schiller) and Hakon Jarl (Oehlenschläger); Rimsky-Korsakov’s exquisite symphonic suite Antar, inspired by Osip Senkovsky’s Arabian tale. Week 3: Grieg’s incidental music to two great Norwegian plays: Sigurd Jorsalfar by Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson and Peer Gynt by Henrik Ibsen. Week 4: Franck’s symphonic poems Les Eolides (Leconte de Lisle), Le Chasseur maudit (Bürger) and Les Djinns (Hugo); Fauré’s incidental music to Pelléas et Mélisande by Maurice Maeterlinck. Week 5: Tchaikovsky’s epic Manfred Symphony, inspired by Lord Byron’s dramatic poem. Week 6: Dvořák’s cantata The Specter’s Bride and symphonic poems The Water Goblin, The Noon Witch, The Golden Spinning Wheel and The Wild Dove, all inspired by the Czech folk poems of Karel Jaromír Erben. Late Romantic composers often drew on popular contemporary poetry, drama and fiction as sources of inspiration in their music. Join us as we explore how Liszt, Grieg, Tchaikovsky, Dvořák and others transformed great stories (from such writers as Schiller, Byron, Hugo and Ibsen) into musical masterpieces.
