
Volunteer opportunities
We depend on the active participation of our members who volunteer in countless ways to strengthen our operations, diversify our programs and keep our operating costs low. When you join Brock House Society, there’s no better way of meeting people and making new friends than by getting involved.
Kitchen Assistant
Assist the chef preparing sandwiches and baked goods. Share your favorite recipes with the BHS community while enjoying the company of the members. There are 2 volunteers per shift - 1 day a week from 8:30am to 11:30am.
- Support baking pastries and making sandwiches.
- Help the kitchen with prep work when there are bigger events.
- Attend the volunteer meetings.
Bistro Server
Welcome members and support the sale of a variety of teas, coffee, delicious baked goods, homemade soups, sandwiches, light meals, lunch specials, and frozen goods to go. Three volunteers per shift; weekly from 9:00am to 2:00pm.
- Sell baking goods, coffee, tea, soup, sandwiches, and meals of the day to members.
- Refill water jugs in the conservatory.
- Refill the napkins on the conservatory tables.
- Organize the top of the tables as needed and keep the Bistro tidy.
- Make sure there are water goblets available for members in the conservatory.
- Help the Bistro service when there are bigger events
- Attend the volunteer meetings.
Bistro Cashier
Unleash your inner sales professional offering members a variety of teas, coffee, baked goods, homemade soups, sandwiches, light meals, creative specials, and a selection of delicious frozen takeaways. Shifts are 1 day per week from 9:00am to 2:00pm.
- Sell baking goods, coffee, tea, soup, sandwiches, and meals of the day to members.
- Communicate with the chef for orders of hot meals to the kitchen.
- Cash sales (charges & change).
- Card sales using a POS machine (training will be provided).
- Keeping the Bistro tidy and presentable.
- Attend the volunteer meetings.
Greeter at Front Desk
Be the welcoming smile in the foyer & greet all of our members as they sign in. Shifts are weekly Monday to Friday from 9:00am to 11:30am, from 11:30am to 1:30pm, or from 1:30pm to 3:30pm.
- Welcome members with your best kindness and friendliness!
- Supervise sign-in protocols for the House.
- Maintain the daily check-in list of registration-based activities.
- Inform both members, and non-members where to go when they ask for directions.
- Know staff members by name to help members and guests when they have questions.
- Communicate with the office in case of questions about programs and need of staff.
- Be up to date with the day's activities, any cancellations and changes.
- Inform members about donation protocols, dates, & drop-off spaces.
- Receive mail/packages and let staff know about them when deliveries are made.
- Attend the volunteer meetings.
Office Desk
Work with the BHS staff to provide office administration support – assist with membership and course or events registrations. Reply to in-person, telephone, & email inquiries. (Office, computer, and organization skills required)
- Work closely with the BH staff.
- Check voice mail every day first thing in the morning, followed up by checking emails
- Support members signing-in.
- Reply to inquiries related to programs, registration dates, cancellations, and refunds (in person, via phone call, and via email).
- Answer phone calls made to the office and direct members to the appropriate staff member when needed.
- Be the point of contact between greeter's desk & staff.
- Issue cash & card sales of programs, and store-front (you will be taught to operate a POS machine for card sales).
- Communicate with the staff to know the daily updates and changes in the daily operations.
- Attend the volunteer meetings.
