Donalda Reid, a retired Vancouver elementary school administrator, has visited several Africian countries. In 1999 she and her husband set off on a safari to see gorillas in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In her book, Captive: A Survival Story, she describes her capture by Rwandan militia "Anyone who has read the small print in brochures advertising Africian trips is aware that Africa can be a dangerous place to visit. It means accepting a degree of risk that might be unacceptable in other places." The reward for the risk - "There, about twelve feet away like a giant midnight-black mountain of shiny fur, sat the silverback (gorilla)".
