Author Talk: Dr. Peter Newman

About this event

The series is convened by Yvonne Mitchell
Author Presenter: Dr. Peter Newman

Connect with authors of books you’ve loved and new titles you’ll want to try. In this intermittent series, authors will read from their work, share their experiences, answer your questions, and sign copies. Expect engaging talks on a wide range of good fiction and non-fiction.

Peter Newman is a retired Toronto family physician and teacher of medical residents who practiced comprehensive, cradle-to-the-grave medicine for over four decades, and has worked around the globe in peacetime and war. Dr. Newman has also been sought after as an expert to assess and improve other doctors’ standards of care, and has brought continuing medical education to doctors internationally. The North York General Hospital established an annual Peter Newman Humanitarian Award in his honour. He received the Presidential Award of the Ontario Medical Association for “exceptional and long-standing humanitarian service that expresses the highest qualities of service by a physician”.

Dr. Newman will read from his recently-published memoir, In Harm’s Way, is a collection of his true stories from Dominica to the Middle East, and from the Arctic to the Amazon and Africa, depicting the encounters, reflections, and self-doubts of a front-line doctor. The book gives the reader a window into the privileged, and intimate, world of the doctor-patient relationship.
