LD201 Fame & the Visual Artist
About this event
Instructor: Gerta Moray
Why do most visual artists still barely scrape a living, while a chosen few watch their work sell for millions? Why do we consider art eternal but spend our money on stuff?
This will not be a systematic, sociological study but a look at the work of selected artists and some of the underlying forces that have propelled them to success.
Topics will include: the heated rivalry of Picasso and Matisse; the patrilineage of Pollock, Rauschenberg, Warhol and Basquiat; infamous women like Kiki Smith and Jenny Saville; Canadians visible and invisible – Jeff Wall, Liz Magor, Landon Mackenzie; and colonial backlash with Mona Hatoum, Chris Ofili, Ai Wei Wei, Yue Minjun.
