Canadian society appears to have entered another ‘hot phase.’ Canonical narratives are being challenged, new identities are being articulated, and public commemoration practices are changing. A case in point is the removal of the statue of Sir John A. Macdonald in Victoria in 2018. Meanwhile, dozens of new public monuments have been erected, including two federal projects that stand out due to their scope and the intensity of the domestic and international reactions to them: the National Holocaust Monument, inaugurated in Ottawa in 2017, and the Memorial to the Victims of Communism, the inauguration of which has again been deferred. In this lecture, we will explore the historical, social, political and artistic contexts of the decisions that were made, and the subsequent reception by Canadians.
