Let’s discover the ancient, magical world of natural color on fabric! Over three consecutive sessions we will learn basic techniques to dye fabric with natural colors. Some dye plants may even already be growing in your garden! We will explore the preparation of natural fabrics, mordants and modifiers, immersion dyeing, painting with mordants, simple shibori (tie and clamp resists), combining different plants to make more colors, and enjoy a basic indigo vat together. Instructor: January Wolodarsky. (See below for more information.)

Session 1: Bonding color to fabrics (3 - 3.5 hours)

In Session 1 we will learn how different natural fibres accept and bond with natural color. We will scour samples of several natural fibres, prepare them with mordant and tannin, learn weight of fabric ratios for achieving depth of color, and  mordant samples of fabric for everyone to dye in the next session. While mordant pots are cooking we will paint small samples with mordant paste to test in the color pots in the following session.

Session 2: Magic of natural color (yellow and red). 2.5 - 3hr
Immersion dyeing: We will make two pots of natural red and yellow colors to immerse small samples and an item per person. Participants will use some resist methods such as shibori, painting with modifiers, or clamping to create patterns before immersing their item in the dye. We can also dye the items we painted in Session 1. Participants can try dipping their item in both colors to achieve ombre, clamp patterns or stripes.

Session 3: Indigo Affair (blue). 2.5 - 3 hrs

Dive into the elusive color of blue through the ancient practice of a collective indigo vat. In session 3 we will discuss different vats we can make at home while deepening our experiments with resist techniques. While enjoying each other’s company and a cup of tea we will experience the unexpected joy of sharing our resist experiment reveals, learning from each other and the enchanting art of the indigo vat.
