Topic Description: This adaptation is a bit more complex in that while it is set in the same time and place (1806 rural England) as Austen's novel and focuses on the same characters, it directly includes the theme of the evils of colonialism, only very vaguely suggested by Austen. Nevertheless, Austen's novel does emphasize the more general theme of greed, which underlies colonialism. Rozema's version also makes the heroine, Fanny Price, spunkier and has her write some of Austen's juvenilia, instead of merely writing to her brother William, as it is in the novel. The film was produced by Harvey Weinstein's Miramax studio, which adds another dimension to the film's and the book's examination of evil. Some Austen fans, of course, are not happy with the inclusion of elements not in the original novel, but the film was very positively reviewed, and the changes make for worthwhile discussion.

Dr. Leblanc, professor emeritus UBC, will join us after the film for a discussion.
