Beethoven & the Revolutionary Spirit

Building on the achievements of Haydn and Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) revolutionized all the important musical genres, including the sonata, concerto, string quartet, and symphony. We will explore a sampling of his major works through audio and video clips featuring legendary pianists, orchestras, and conductors.


Week 1: From Bonn to Vienna; "The Spirit of Mozart from Haydn's Hands"

Week 2: Heiligenstadt Testament and Eroica Symphony

Week 3: Increasing Isolation and Napoleonic Invasions; Fidelio and Fifth Symphony

Week 4: The Congress of Vienna Period and Aftermath

Week 5: Final Years; Missa Solemnis and Ninth Symphony
